Motion capture takes into account every detail: body micro-movements, balance, weight, inertia, and even facial expressions. The production process itself is divided into the following stages:

  1. Preparation. Actors are dressed in suits with sensors and markers. The suits will track every gesture, step, and body turn. A camera is attached to the head. It’s capable of capturing the smallest detail on the face: a glance, lip movement, an emotion.
  2. Movements Recording. Cameras and sensors record the physics of the actor’s body during gesticulation and movement, then transmit the data to a computer.
  3. Processing. Specialists work with the obtained data in special software, translating everything into digital space and developing the 3D animation.

Thus, the 3D character comes to life, performing stunts, jumps, flights, and other movements with maximum realism.

Avatar (2009)

James Cameron essentially took motion capture technology to a new level. In addition to special suits, the actors wore head-mounted cameras that recorded their facial expressions. During filming, Cameron could see the digitized characters and the virtual background where the actors were performing. This made it possible to preserve the spontaneity and realism within the fantastical world of the planet Pandora.
